What Is a Tag Line?

You see tag lines everywhere you go:

• "Just Do It"
• "When It Absolutely, Positively Has to Be There Overnight"
• "Build Your Web Business 20 Minutes at a Time"

A tag line is a very concise statement of your USP or Unique Selling Proposition. It's a short slogan that tells what you do, what benefit you offer and what makes you different all at the same time.

Your 20 Minute Task

Take out the USP that you wrote in the "Create Your USP" 20 minute task. Condense it to ten words or less. (Less is better.) Invent how to say what the USP says in a clever, short way.

Here are some ways to get ideas:

• Brainstorm with other people.
• Pull out the key words in your USP and rearrange them.
• Substitute synonyms from thesaurus.com.

Make the benefit to your customers obvious. Write down as many ideas as come to mind.

Your goal is to end up with a tag line. When you've got one, circle it and put it in your "Competitor Intelligence" folder. (If you have to repeat this 20 minute task in order to come up with a great tag line, feel free to do so. Your tag line will become a major part of your business's image and a valuable selling tool.)

In a future 20 minute task, you'll check to make sure your tag line is not trademarked. But it's a good idea to give it a short time to mature in your mind. You can and probably will alter your tag line in the next few hours or days. Try it out on people and make changes until you find something that's just perfect. After that, it will become such an essential element of your brand that you won't want or be able to change it.
